The Affair of the Diamond Necklace was a scandal which involved Marie Antoinette and a certain Madame Du Barry at Louis XVI court in France around 1780.

Marie Antoinette was implicated in a crime to defraud the crown jewellers of a very expensive diamond necklace. The affair was said to have been a crucial event that was the final nail in the coffin and it was the beginning of the French Revolution.

The trinket was originally made for Madame Du Barry by Louis XV he was absolutely in lust with her and the necklace was reputed to be worth around 2, 000, 000 Livres which would have been an incredible amount of money equivalent to 500kgs of gold.

I created this necklace after looking back through a sketch book I made when I went to Paris a few years ago. I was taken there as a surprise birthday present from a beautiful boy. We walked everywhere, has lunch in the Tuilerie Gardens, took the Bateau Bus down the Seine to Notre Dame and stayed in a tiny little boutique hotel in Montmartre. I can't wait to go back there it was so beautiful.

The sterling silver plated locket charm opens and measures 30mm x 23mm and the smaller charm measures 24mm x 15mm the small heart measures 12mm and the locket is set on a black mourning ribbon. The necklace will arrive beautifully gift wrapped ready for giving or simply keeping.
